The Civilizational Role of Andalusia in the Scientific Foundations of Western Civilization

Abstract

This research explores the civilizational role of Al-Andalus as a fundamental bridge of knowledge between Islamic civilization and Europe during the Middle Ages. The study examines how Al-Andalus contributed to laying the foundations of the Western scientific renaissance, using a historical and analytical approach. The research is divided into three main chapters: the first analyzes the historical stages of scientific development and the factors of prosperity; the second reviews specific contributions in applied sciences such as medicine and astronomy; and the third clarifies the mechanisms for transferring this knowledge to Europe.

The research concludes that Al-Andalus was not merely a geographical location but a beacon of knowledge that illuminated the darkness of the Middle Ages in Europe. This was achieved through a massive translation movement in centers like Toledo, the journeys of European students, and its direct influence on the academic curricula of emerging universities. The study also confirmed that Andalusian scientific progress was not detached from reality; it had practical applications in agriculture and engineering, which reinforced its status as a driving force for civilizational progress. The findings of this research affirm that the European Renaissance was a product of civilizational interaction, in which Al-Andalus played a pivotal and central role.
