The Environmental Factor and its Impact on Shaping Vernacular Architecture in Jado City

Jado city, located in the Nafusa Mountains of western Libya, stands as a distinguished paradigm of vernacular architectural heritage. It embodies the profound interaction between humans and their natural environment, reflecting a meticulous understanding of the local community's needs and its relationship with the ecological context. This research paper aims to analyze the impact of environmental factors on shaping the traditional architecture of Jadu. This is achieved by examining the design characteristics of the buildings, their reliance on indigenous building materials, and the construction techniques employed to achieve adaptation to the region's climatic and geographical conditions. The study adopted a descriptive-analytical methodology, combining field research, documentation of traditional architectural typologies, and the analysis of environmental integration elements such as natural ventilation, thermal insulation, and urban spatial organization. The study concluded that the traditional architecture in Jado is not merely a tangible cultural heritage; rather, it constitutes a sustainable cognitive system. This system can be leveraged to develop contemporary construction strategies that adhere to the principles of sustainability and environmental adaptation. The findings revealed that the urban fabric of Jado is founded on principles of social solidarity and the intelligent utilization of natural resources, yielding an integrated paradigm that combines functional aesthetics with environmental harmony. Nevertheless, this architecture faces numerous challenges, most notably neglect, natural degradation, and the pressures of modern urbanization. These threats risk the imminent loss of the city's architectural and cultural identity unless effective preservation measures are implemented. The paper proposes a set of solutions and recommendations, primarily the documentation of architectural heritage and its integration into future urban development plans. It also emphasizes raising local community awareness regarding its preservation, in addition to activating cultural tourism as an economic catalyst to support the sustainability of this urban legacy. Thus, the study asserts that preserving the traditional architecture in Jado represents a fundamental step toward building a sustainable urban future rooted in the authenticity of the past while addressing the challenges of the present.
